7 Tips to Be a Successful EntrepreneurDoing our "own thing’" professionally is a dream of many, who wouldn’t want to be his own boss, in complete control of his time and income? Who wouldn’t want to devote their days to something for which she feels great passion?

But, like anything else worth doing in life, it takes hard work. It is scary. For these reasons, the idea remains in the realm of fantasy, and there is never serious thought given to making it a reality. If you have found the courage within to strike out on your own, congratulations for deciding to make your dreams come true.

Now, what you need to do is bone up on some tips on how to make it work.

1. Define Your ‘’Why’’

When we are clear on why we want the things we want, we have a much greater chance of succeeding. There will be so many things that can potentially get you off track, from setbacks to your own personal fears and doubts.

The "why’" is your anchor. You will do what you need to succeed, you will be able to better weather any storms you encounter on your path to being a successful business owner.

2. Make Sure the Passion is There

While you naturally want to give some thought as to whether the business you are thinking about could make you real money, be careful of simply choosing one based on that alone.

The idea of making a lot of money, regardless of whether you truly feel a passion for the line of work, may be quite alluring, and you may feel right now that you are okay with that. But, without that inner fire, you will find it very difficult to do what will be required of you to make your venture successful.

3. Don’t Ignore Gut Instincts

While there are plenty of decisions that you will be able to make based on calculations, spreadsheets and hard data, many successful entrepreneurs will tell you that their gut instinct is their most powerful guiding force. Our tendency to want to figure out everything ‘’logically’’ often leads us to ignore those feelings. But, don’t.

4. Enjoy the Journey

To be successful, you must create specific goals and a plan to reach them. But, it is important to enjoy the journey along the way. Don’t always be focusing on the ‘’end game.’’ Celebrate the little victories and achievements along the way. Always keep an eye on all that you have done so far, not just what hasn’t happened yet.

5. Make Time Management a Priority

Most people complain about their lack of time, but the real problem in my humble opinion, is poor management of this precious resource. As an entrepreneur, you will be wearing many hats, and there will be no shortage of things you must tend to, from pitching clients to getting your social media campaign up and running.

Unless you are already a whiz at managing your time, which most of us aren’t, you need to make a serious effort here, lest you risk failure.

6. Work on Yourself

Did you ever notice that the most successful people in business always seem to place a high premium on personal development and developing a success mindset? That is not a coincidence—they are necessary ingredients for success.

All your life you have been given messages that work against people like yourself. You may have some bad habits that could get in the way of your success, like procrastination or trouble finishing what you start. You may be full of doubt and fear about striking out on your own.

7. Tighten the Purse Strings

While the old saying ‘’it takes money to make money’’ certainly rings true, be careful of spending more than you absolutely have to when you first start out. If you can work out of your home for now, don’t drop rent on office space.

If you can get by with some independent contractors for now, hold off on taking on employees and all the expense that entails. Before you purchase something, stop and ask yourself if this something you absolutely need right now.
