1. Passion
Many times passion is overlooked in an online business, but it is probably one of the most important factors and is the foundation for the other P’s discussed below. You may not be the smartest, but if you’re the most passionate, chances are that you’ll end up on top. Choose a topic or get into an industry that you are interested in and enjoy. This will keep you motivated and will also help you with the remaining 4 P’s.
2. Plans
Would you start building a house without a blueprint? You’ll end up wasting all of your resources and have nothing to show for it in the end. In the same way, you would never get involved with an online business without some sort of a plan.
It doesn’t have to be definite or set in stone, but having a general plan in writing will keep you focused and looking ahead. It will also help you to be more efficient with your time and resources and thus make you more money online.
3. People
You know the saying, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. Although I don’t want to say that this is completely true in the online world, it does hold some significant weight. Furthermore, in case you didn’t realize, the visitors to your site are actual people with real emotions, feelings, and thoughts. To be successful, you need to realize this and make your customers happy. Without other people, your online business would mean nothing.
4. Persistence
Blog everyday? Update with new content? If these seem like arduous chores, there is something seriously wrong with your business strategy. If you want to make money online, you have to be persistent, even when things aren’t going your way.
I realize that it’s tough to be motivated enough to blog or update everyday when you’re making a mere 25 cents. But without this persistence, you’ll never get past $0.25 to see $25, $250, and $25,000,000.
5. Patience
Going along the same lines as persistence is patience. Learn to wait for delayed gratification. I see so many webmasters who simply give up because they don’t see results in one day. Success takes time and you have to be willing to wait for it.
Do you plant a tree one day and expect it to be 100 feet tall the next? You can water it all you want but it just won’t happen. This applies to making money online, search engine optimization, and life in general. All good things come to those who wait!
