How To Be a Happy Blogger - Blogging should be fun. If you’ve ever felt that blogging can be a bit of a chore or it doesn’t make you happy, this post’s for you.

How can you be a happy blogger?

1. Keep a List of Topics to Choose From

There’s nothing worse than running out of ideas for your blog. Sometimes, I can’t think of anything to write about. On those days, I have a look at my blog topic list. This is a page in my A4 notebook where I write down the titles of posts I’d like to write.

Read more about how I use two notepads to write my blog posts.

2. Plan Ahead – Don’t Cram!

Are you someone who puts off today what you could do tomorrow? I know exactly how you feel. I used to do this all the time with school assignments.

Life can get in the way of your blog sometimes – and it’s fine to put yourself first. Just don’t keep pushing your blog to the bottom of your list of priorities, and then frantically “cram” your next post when you realise there’s only an hour before you want to publish it.

The best way to plan ahead is to work out how many posts you can write per week – not the maximum amount, but the most realistic number. If you can, write your posts at the weekend, or a few days before they’re due to go out. Don’t write your posts then immediately publish them.

You’ll often find mistakes that could have been caught if you’d done some proof-reading. (I always ask my wife to proof-read my posts before they go up.)

3. Write What Interests You

Do you write posts based on what you think you *should* write, rather than what you *want* to write? Maybe it’s time to rethink why you’re blogging in the first place.

If you’ve started a blog on a topic that you don’t really care about, it will show in the way you write your posts. You should be passionate and enthusiastic about your posts.

Ask yourself – if you could blog about any topic, what would you choose? If your answer reveals something very different to the blog(s) you already run, it might be time to try a new blog. However...

4. Don’t Run Too Many Blogs

Setting up too many blogs, too quickly, is a great way to burn out and quit blogging altogether. Or to ditch a lot of blogs in a fairly short space of time.

But if you do think of a great idea for a new blog that you’d really like to try, I say go for it. Just don’t start too many blogs at once.

5. Too Busy? Blog Less

If you’re finding it harder and harder to find the time for your blog, maybe you’re trying to do more than your free time allows. Be straight with yourself – can you really manage to blog every single day?

6. Don’t Focus Too Much on Money

Yes, times are hard and blogging isn’t free, if you have your own domain name. But if you focus too much on making money, you can lose the essence of what makes blogging fun. If blogging feels more like a long, hard slog to the finish line... slogging? ... maybe it’s time to refocus your priorities.

Don’t obsess over the money you might make from your blog – if you can make some money, excellent – but it’s a lot easier to be a happy blogger if you want to blog long before money plays a part.

Of course, money is still a motivator. It’s just not a very good motivator if you want to earn money, but you earn hardly anything and don’t seem to be able to change that.

7. Schedule Your Social Time

Set aside some time to go on Twitter and just chill out. Don’t link to your blog – don’t even talk about it. Just make comments, post questions, reply to others, and have fun.

It’s also good to get out and read other blogs, leaving comments if you have something to say. Don’t get lazy – it does take time, but it’s a really great way to get out of the world of your own blog(s) and see some other sites.

8. Make Blogging Fun

How do you make blogging more fun? I usually put on some music. I guess it’s almost Christmas as I write this, so I also like to eat, drink (not alcohol, just tea) and be merry!

And that’s how to be a happy blogger!
